Driving license in Dubai: Demand to make “sleep apnea” test mandatory

Dubai: Medical experts want drivers to undergo “sleep apnea” before getting a driving license in Dubai.

According to the report published in Khaleej Times, they said that it should be the precondition for acquiring or renewing the driving license. This test should be for all professional drivers including taxi drivers and long-haul truck drivers, they added.

Speaking on this issue, Dr. Fabrizio Facchini, consultant pulmonologist at Valiant Clinic said that this step will make sure that drivers don’t sleep while driving.

Facchini also said that “sleep apnea” is the major cause of many road accidents in Dubai. Five percent of the world population is suffering from EDS, he added.

It may be mentioned that Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder in which people stop breathing frequently while sleeping. This disorder results in Excessive Daytime Sleepiness (EDS). However, it can be treated.

Explaining the treatment for this disorder, Facchini said, “Polysomnography can be done in which patient’s brainwave activity, respiratory patterns, heart rate, chest movement, etc are monitored to provide effective therapy”, Khaleej Times reported.
