Eight lose sight in eye operations: Minister

Minister for Health, Medical and Family Welfare C. Laxma Reddy has revealed in the Assembly that eight patients lost eye sight in the operated eye. Since, the eye sight in the other eye is normal, they have not lost eye sight totally, he added.

Responding to a question raised by Congress members S A Sampath Kumar, Tammannagari Ram Mohan Reddy and Dr G Chinna Reddy during the question hour in the Assembly on Tuesday, the Minister said the cause of infection was due to contaminated Ringer Lactate solution used during eye surgery. He said the government lodged a complaint against Yousuf Badar, managing director of Messrs Habeeb Pharmaceuticals Pvt. Ltd, Nagpur for violation of Section 18 (a) (1) and section 18 (a) (vi) punishable U/s Section 27 (d) of Drugs & Cosmetics Act, 1940 in the Court of VI Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court, Nampally vide PI No. 167/2016 and SR No. 2975/2016 dated August 24, 2016.

The case was pending in the Court for trial.  The hospital authorities had given best possible expert care to prevent further complications. (NSS)
