Ex SP corporator Noorjahan Shaikh commits suicide in her residence

Mumbai: Former corporator of Samajwadi Party (SP), Noorjahan Rafique Shaikh, allegedly committed suicide in her residence by hanging herself from the ceiling fan in Mumbai’s Sanjay Nagar. The 45-year-old was elected from ward number 137 in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) twice in Shivaji Nagar area.

The police are investigating reports of a marital dispute between Noorjahan and her husband, Rafique. She was found dead on Monday morning. When her three sons Imran, Shahrukh and Jamal, who lived with her, realised that she did wake up, they looked into her room through the keyhole, and then they broke the door open.

“It’s not clear when exactly she hanged herself – whether in the night or early morning. Only a postmortem report will ascertain these facts,” said Deepak Pagare, senior police inspector of Shivaji Nagar police station. There was no suicide note found, he added.
