Mohali (Punjab): Former Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) of Punjab Police and international wrestler Jagdish Bhola was convicted in three drug cases by a CBI court here on Wednesday.

The quantum of his sentence is yet to be pronounced.

Bhola, who served as DSP in the Punjab police, was dismissed from service in 2012 after his involvement in various drugs racket was revealed.

The special CBI court at Mohali in January 2018 had framed charges against 13 accused, including wrestler-turned-policeman-turned-drug kingpin, in the multi-crore drug racket following the clubbing of three separate Enforcement Case Information Reports (ECIRs) filed by the Enforcement Directorate (ED).

The Punjab Police had busted the multi-crore drug racket and claimed to have recovered synthetic drugs, including heroin, methamphetamine, pseudoephedrine, ephedrine, opium, intoxicating powder, monoethylmine, phenoxylate, hydrochloride and Rs 1,91,64,800 in Indian currency besides some foreign exchange, arms and luxury cars from accused.

The police had registered cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985 along with various Sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Arms Act between 2013 and 2014.

Following this, the ED had filed multiple ECIRs for violating the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002.
