Hong Kong stocks shrug off global downturn to gain ground

Hong Kong: Hong Kong recovered from earlier losses to finish higher Friday, but Shanghai again lost ground as both US-China tensions and political turbulence in Washington intensified.

The Hang Seng Index gained 0.51 percent, or 129.89 points, to close at 25,753.42.

The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index ended 0.79 percent lower, or 20.02 points, to 2,516.25, while the Shenzhen Composite Index, which tracks stocks on China’s second exchange, lost 0.96 percent, or 12.44 points, to 1,284.66.
