Hyderabad pollution kills 4 lakh fish at Edulabad Lake

Hyderabad: At least four lakh fish died and washed ashore in Edulabad Lake, which is located on the border of Outer Ring Road (ORR) near Ghatkesar. The lake is also known as Lakshminarayana Cheruvu.

Batte Shankar, Edulabad sarpanch alleged that the incident took place due to pollution from Hyderabad’s main dump-yard at Jawahar Nagar, reports The News Minute.

“There is a large amount of leachate that flows out of Jawahar Nagar, and it has polluted three lakes in the process, as it flows through Dammaiguda, Rampally, Ghatkesar, before it reaches Edulabad,” Shankar said. According to him, a few months ago the lake water was clean enough taking a bath in it.

In a similar incident recently, lakhs of fish died at Gandigudem Cheruvu lake allegedly due to toxins dumped by pharma companies into the lake, that surround it. This incident had caused a heavy damage to local fishermen.

“According to environmental norms, a dumping yard should recycle most of the waste and have zero discharge, which is possible with the help of today’s technology. Instead of that, they’re polluting and poisoning multiple lakes,” Shankar said.

District Fisheries Officer, E Balaiah told reporters, that heavy rains caused polluted water to flow into lakes through Erimalle canal from Jawahar Nagar dumping yard.

Samples of polluted water have been taken by the officials of Pollution Control Board who visited the scene.
