Asia Bibi, the Christian woman who was acquitted by the Pakistan Supreme Court in a blasphemy case last month, has earlier been released from a women’s prison in Multan.
She was convicted and sentenced to death in 2010 for allegedly insulting Islam during an argument with three Muslim women.
Now she has been offered refuge in Italy. Rome said it would grant refuge to Asia Bibi following a request for assistance from her husband, Ashiq Masih.
Matteo Salvini, the Italian deputy prime minister said: “I want women and children whose lives are at risk to be able to have a secure future, in our country or in other Western countries. So, I will do everything humanly possible to guarantee that for Ms Bibi.”
Her husband had previously urged the UK, US and Canada to give his wife refuge.
