A statue of Mahatma Gandhi was pulled down by lecturers on a university campus in Ghana. The teachers said that Mahatma Gandhi was a racist.
Teachers at the University of Ghana decided to pull down the statue after campaigning for the removal of the statue for two years.
The teachers cited many of Gandhi’s writings which refer to black South Africans as ‘kaffirs’ and accuse the South African government of trying to ‘drag down’ Indians to the level of ‘half-heathen natives’ and describe Indians as ‘infinitely superior’ to black people.
Earlier in June 2016 the statue was revealed to the public by India’s former President Pranab Mukherjee but right after that lecturers started a petition to get rid of the statue, which had been located in the university’s recreational court.
According to a report published in MailOnline, the petition said that Gandi was ‘racist’ and called for African heroes to be honoured instead.
The protests against Mahatma Gandhi is not limited to Africa, in Davis, Calif, a similar statue has been protested, and plans to honour Gandhi with a statue in London have also met opposition.
