Many politicians worried over names not included in Assam NRC draft

Guwahati: The draft of National Register of Citizens (NRC) was published on Monday which left as many as 40,07,707 applicants citizenship uncertain among more than 3 crores of applicants, HT reported.

BJP MLA Shiladitya Dev’s family members were included in the first draft of NRC but his name was missed, however, his name was included in the final draft published on Monday.

The BJP leader is widely known for his anti-Bangladeshi stand.

“It’s a welcome step that the complete draft has been published. We have to work harder now to ensure that foreigners are kept out of electoral rolls…,” said Dev.

Mohd. Azmal Hoque, Retd junior commissioned officer of Indian Army was in the headlines after he was summoned by foreigner’s tribunal to prove his identity of as Indian citizen in 2017.

While the names of his wife, mother and elder brother’s family are present in the Monday’s list his name, his two children’s and his younger brother’s family are missing.

“It is really sad that even after the foreigner’s tribunal cleared my name, we have to prove that we are Indian citizens,” said Hoque.

Lok Sabha Assam MP Badruddin Ajmal’s name was skipped in the first draft that was prepared on December 31 last year.

However, Ajmal who is also the president of All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), is now included in the complete draft.

“Names of 40 lakh missing from the draft is not a small thing. But those left out have a chance to file claims. We want an error-free complete NRC list,” he said.

Another BJP MLA from Borkhola Kishore Nath’s family was not included n the Monday’s list.
Despite their names were added in the first draft of NRC and Nath and his six family members were summoned by a foreigners’ tribunal in May to prove his citizenship, their names have not been included in the completed draft.

“…Our names were in the first draft as well, but since we were summoned by the tribunal, there was some apprehension of being left out,” Nath said.
