Mumbai: ‘Public-shame’ for people abusing parents

Mumbai: Children neglecting their elderly parents will now be publicly shamed in Mumbai after CM Devendra Fadnavis led Maharashtra government took positive steps to help elderly senior citizens and bring social justice to elderly Mumbaikars with a Government resolution.

This Government Resolution (GR) provides protection to the elderly which would put any person on public ‘defaulter list’ for not looking after their parents, times now reported.

The GR to bring public shame to people was issued on Wednesday which had also lowered the age limit of elderly to 60 years instead of the 65.

The government has also asked numerous state departments to keep aside funds for elderly citizens.

As per the proposal, in order to implement the plan so that the identification of defaulting children whose parents are senior citizens is done, social workers will work closely with the local police.

Moreover, regular visits to these identified elderly people will be a norm to
keep a check on the defaulters treatment towards their parents.

According to a report published in TOI, the government is also planning to come up with a helpline solely dedicated to the support of senior citizens.
