Nepal: One killed, four injured in police firing

Kathmandu: A child died while four others were injured as police opened fire at protesters staging a demonstration in front of the District Administration Office in Kanchanpur on Friday.

The deceased has been identified as Chetan Bhatta of Bhimdutta Municipality, Bhagatpur. Kanchanpur has been witnessing violent clashes and riots since several days over the arrest of a rape and murder case suspect.

The locals of Kanchanpur’s Bhimduttanagar protested demanding action against those involved in the rape and subsequent murder of 13-year-old girl.

The minor girl was killed after she was allegedly raped in a sugarcane farm on July 26.

On Sunday, the local police declared the victim’s brother-in-law as the accused, but locals demanded his release deeming him to be mentally challenged and blamed the police of victimising him.

The protest in Kanchanpur intensified on Friday after Nepal Communist Party (NCP) leader Bhim Bahadur Rawal claimed that the incident was being politicised.

Earlier, eight other persons, including two police personnel, were injured during a confrontation between police personnel and protestors in Traffic Chowk, Kanchanpur.
