Osman Sagar, Himayath Sagar water suffices till summer

Hyderabad: In order to provide drinking water to the citizens of Hyderabad in summer, Osman Sagar and Himyath Sagar will play a major role. Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board has started taking water from these two water bodies after a gap of two years. This decision was taken in view of the increasing demand for water supply in the city.

According to the statement made by Chief General Manager Transmission, Mr. D. Sudarshan for the past two years, 420-460 million liters of water was being supplied from four major rivers namely, Krishna, Godavari, Manjira and Singur.

Water Board has decided to extract 480 million liters of water since January 2009. This includes water which is taken from Osman Sagar and Himayath Sagar also. The demand for drinking water was not so huge earlier. Water Board took this decision since the level of the underground water table has decreased.

It may be mentioned that daily, 10500 MLT from Osman Sagar and 5000 MLT from Himyath Sagar is being utilized. Till the end of summer, this water will be sufficient.

It may be recalled that in 2017, Water Board had stopped taking water from Osman Sagar and Himyath Sagar in order to keep this water reserved for 84 adjoining villages.

According to the estimate of the water board, the water available in the existing water bodies will be sufficient to supply 400 MLT of water till 2021.

Water Board noted that demand for water supply is on the increase since 2001.
