Sangeeta’s fight for justice enters fifth day

While the relentless fight by a young married woman for her legal and constitutional rights from her husband and in-laws has entered the fifth day today, the stoic silence on the part of the powers that be to come her rescue has raised many an eye brow among the netizens.

It might be mentioned here that Sangeetha was mercilessly assaulted and thrown out of the house by her husband Srinivas Reddy, a TRS leader, and his parents at Boduppal a few days back. A video footage of the heartless act on the hapless young mother of a two-year old daughter has gone viral and sent shockwaves among the people. The inhuman treatment was meted out to the young woman for questioning her husband marrying another woman.

Not to be cowed down by the brutal acts of her husband and in-laws, Sangeetha began and agitation by squatting before her house in Boduppal along with her small daughter. Soon her protest attracted various women’s organizations, civil society unions, political leaders etc. Even the TRS MP of Malkajgiri Lok Sabha constituency besides a ruling party MLA also visited the place and assured to ensure justice for her.

As the issue was taking a serious turn, the police registered a case and launched manhunt for Srinivas Reddy, his father, mother and brother who disappeared soon after the incident. While Srinivas Reddy was held immediately, his other family members were tracedĀ  from a hiding place in Malkajgiri and arrested.

The arrested were produced before a magistrate who granted bail to Srinivas Reddy’s father and brother, while his mother was denied and sent to Chanchalguda Jail. Srinivas Reddy is in police remand.

Meanwhile Sangeeth’sĀ  agitation for justice entered the fifth day today and she asserted the arrest of her husband and others would not resolve the matter, She demanded that the government should intervene and do justice to her like ensuring her rightful place for herself and her daughter. She also dismissed the claim by the police that she was demanding Rs. Three crores for a settlement. Money is not the criteria. What I need is that I should be given my rights as a legally-wedded wife and my daughter her father, he observed.

What is surprising is that despite the issue has attracted nation-wide interest, the inaction on the part of the powers that be is making many tongues wagging. Is the TRS leadership not intervening in the matter because of the main accused in the case is a ruling party leader, is the question that is making rounds. (NSS).
