Tabrez Ansari: 18th person to be brutally lynched in past 3 years in Jharkhand

RANCHI: Tabrez Ansari lynching by self-styled vigilantes is the 18th incident in the past three years in Jharkhand.

Dozens of innocents lives have been lost because of the unabated spate of mob violence triggered by a variety of factors ranging from suspicion of carrying beef, cow slaughter, cattle theft or child-lifting rumours.

LATEHAR LYNCHING 2016

The first mob lynching in Jharkhand refers to the case of lynching of two Muslim cattle traders in Latehar district.

On 18 March 2016, 12-years-old Imteyaz Khan and 32-years-old Mazlum Ansari were brutally assaulted and then hanged from a tree by a mob of self-appointed gau rakshaks in Khaprelwar village of Latehar district.

Eight people were convicted and awarded life imprisonment by the sessions court in December 19, 2018. Each of them was also slapped with a fine of Rs 25,000.

RAMGARH LYNCHING 2017

On June 29, 2017, 40-year-old Alimuddin alias Asgar Ali lynched by a mob of over 100 led by supporters of Bajrang Dal and the local cow protection committee on the suspicion that he was allegedly carrying beef in his car in the Bazaar Tand locality of Jharkhand’s Ramgarh town. The fringe group had also set ablaze his Maruti Van in the busy market place.

On March 21, a fast track court here sentenced 11 accused, including BJP leader Nityanand Mahto to life imprisonment in connection with the lynching Alimuddin.

SHOBHAPUR LYNCHING 2017

On May 18, 2017, four men, Sheik Haleem,Sheik Nayeem, Mohammed Sajjad and Siraj Khan, all residents of Haldipokhar were lynched over rumours of child lifting in Shobhapur and Padnamsai. A fast-track court in July 2018 convicted and sentenced 12 people to four years’ rigorous imprisonment for “obstructing and attacking government officials on duty, attacking with deadly weapons, trespassing into other’s house, disturbing law and order, breaking public peace”.

GODDA LYNCHING 2018

On June 13, 2018, two Muslim men Sirabuddin Ansari (35) and Murtaza Ansari (30) allegedly beaten to death by a mob over suspicions that they were stealing buffaloes.

A video of the mob’s attack surfaced on social media that showed brutality inflicted on the men by the villagers. Four people have been arrested and later registered two cases-one against the murderer of Murtuza and Sirabuddin and another against three others people with Ansari who managed to flee the scene. The matter is at evidence stage pending trial.

PALAMU LYNCHING 2019

On March, 2019, 22-year-old Abdul Vakil Khan was lynched by a mob in Palamu after he and his 20 year-old brother Danish Khan confronted the youths who were teasing their sister.

In the incident, Vakil died of internal injuries after hit with a rod on his chest, while Danish sustained serious injuries.

TABREZ LYNCHING 2019

On June 18, 2019 Tabrez Ansari, 22, succumbed to his injuries allegedly being mercilessly beaten up by a mob merely on the basis of suspicion of attempted burglary in Saraikela Kharsawanand area of Jamshedpur in Jharkhand.

The Pune-based welder was tied to a pole and was beaten up mercilessly for hours and instructed to chant ‘Jai Shri Ram’ and ‘Jai Hanuman’ before being handed over to the police.

In Jharkhand, Dalits too have been the targets. The same is the case with Adivasis and Christians.

Similar incidents were recently reported from across the country too but 2019 will be remembered as the year of Tabrez Ansari’s lynching after the cases like the lynching of  Pehlu Khan or Mohammad Akhlaq that created mass outrage and nationwide furore.
