Telangana: Government to introduce law to curb illegal contract marriages

Hyderabad: Earlier many Muslim scholars and activists together held a meeting with the Telangana Government in October to suggest amendments in the draft proposed by the State Minorities Welfare Department which seemed to interfere with the Muslim Law.

Deputy CM Mohammed Mahmood Ali has today during the Question Hour in the council said that the State Government is planning to introduce a law to regulate the contract marriages, adding that the Government has already initiated measures to curb the illegal contract marriages in the city.

Replying to a question during the question hour raised by MLC M.S. Prabhakar Rao Deputy CM said nine cases were registered in the city for illegal contract marriages between 2011 and 2017 followed by suspension of four Qazis who were performing these illegal marriages adding that the issue is a social menace in the city.

MIM MLC Syed Amin Jafri said that his party is willing to support all measures in order to curb these illegal contract marriages in the city.

He said that the Gulf Cooperation Council follows some mandatory laws and guidelines pertaining to the marriages. The mandatory age difference between the bride and the groom and also providing the financial support to the bride’s family.

He further said that the Indian marriage rules are nearly 140 years old and that now it needs to be reformed with discussions with the external affairs ministry.
