Will Shatrughan Sinha contest against Narendra Modi in Varanasi?

Shatrughan Sinha, who is popularly known as ‘Shotgun’, to contest against the Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Varanasi in next year’s Lok Sabha elections? Samajwadi Party (SP) leaders indicated that the party could field the Bollywood actor in the temple town.

Shatrughan Sinha attended a programme to mark the birth anniversary of Jaiprakash Narain along with the former Union finance minister Yashwant Sinha which was hosted by SP at its office on Thursday. Both launched an anger against BJP and Modi at the programme. SP leaders went into a group soon to discuss the possibility of fielding the actor.

Shatrughan directly attacked the PM Modi on several issues, he has been looking for a safe seat for the 2019 elections. Sources in SP said that the party may consider offering him a ticket if he quits the BJP ahead of the polls. Political watchers said Shatrughan has a large following in Varanasi, which is adjacent to his home state Bihar. The rebel BJP MP also has a lot of ‘kayasth’ supporters in Varanasi.

A section of senior SP leaders has reportedly drawn the attention of party chief Akhilesh Yadav towards Shatrughan being a potential candidate in Varanasi as they saw an outpouring of emotions after posters criticising Modi were found in many places in his constituency after a recent incident of attacks on migrants from UP and Bihar in Gujarat.
