NPR makes NRC more dangerous than in Assam: Harsh Mander

New Delhi: Harsh Mander, prominent human rights activist and the former civil servant said expressed concern over the National Population Register (NPR). He said that it is the foundation of NRC under 2003 rules.

He further said that NPR will make NRC even more dangerous than in Assam as it allows the state to handpick ‘doubtful’ citizens.

He tweeted, “NPR is not only the foundation for NRC under 2003 Rules . It makes the NRC even more dangerous than in Assam. In Assam, despite all bias, all citizens were required to produce documents. The NPR will allow the state to handpick ‘doubtful’ citizens. And we know who they will pick”.

It may be mentioned that on Tuesday, the Union Cabinet approved the conduct of the Census of India 2021 and updating of NPR.

Prakash Javadekar said that the cabinet has approved the expenditure of Rs 8,754.23 crore for the Census of India 2021 and Rs. 3,941.35 crore for NPR.

It will be conducted by the Office of the Registrar General of India (RGI) under Union Home Ministry and the exercise to update NPR would be held between April and September 2020 in all states and Union Territories.
