Rajasthan: After removing prefix ‘Veer’, no seminar on Savarkar

JAIPUR: After removing the prefix ‘veer’ from Hindu Mahasabha leader Vinayak Damodar Savarkar’s name in the class 12th history book, the Congress government led by CM Ashok Gehlot in Rajasthan has now say no to seminar on VD Savarkar.

According to a report in Economic Times, officials from Rajasthan University has confirmed to declined the Indian Council for Historical Research (ICHR)’s request seeking permission to conduct a seminar on VD Savarkar.

“We had sought space and permission from the Rajasthan University to hold a talk series on Savarkar in their campus but they got back saying we could choose any other topic,” an ICHR functionary told ET.

Earlier, Savarkar prefixed ‘Veer’ in the chapter 12th history book removed and it now refers to him as Vinayak Damodar Savarkar who “plotted assassination” of Mahatma Gandhi, who was killed by Nathuram Godse on January 30, 1948, less than a year after India gained independence from Britain.

Recently, the ruling BJP government said that Savarkar should be conferred with the country’s highest civilian award.

The Congress party has lashed out at the BJP for propping up the name of Savarkar for Bharat Ratna.

In its manifesto for Maharashtra Assembly elections, the BJP had promised to confer the Bharat Ratna award on Savarkar.
