Telangana: Every Student will now have a ‘Unique ID Number’ besides Aadhaar

Hyderabad: Students in Telangana state will now be allotted a unique ID number starting next academic year as decided by the State government to keep a track of students dropping out.

Different from Aadhaar number, these unique IDs will be an additional identity of every school going child irrespective of whether he/she is studying in government schools or any local/private school, TT reports.

This tracking system also known as the Student Tracking system will also track students shifting from one school to another school and shall be an online system which also means the academic whereabouts about any and every school going children will now available at just a click of the mouse.

Planned by the Directorate of School Education (DSE) the tracking system will ascertain the number of students shifting from government schools to residential education system or private schools or from private to government schools in the State.

If implemented, every time a student needs to take admission into any other school or wants to shift his school the authorities will be required to enter the unique ID number for admission which makes it easy to track the student.

Since currently, there is no mechanism that can track the transfer of students or dropouts the DSE has planned this system.

“We do not know how many students are migrating from the government to private and private to government schools. The new system will help us track students besides the number of out-of-school children,” a senior official said.

This unique ID number is highly likely to be linked with the Aadhaar-based enrollment system besides biometric attendance which is already being implemented in all schools in the State.

About 96 percent of the students enrolled in the schools have submitted their Aadhaar details to the department.

This apart, Aadhaar-based biometric attendance system is being used in 9,349 government-run schools in 12 districts. About 25,000 schools, including primary, upper primary and high schools will get the biometric equipment in the next academic year.

Students have to give their attendance once before consuming the mid-day meal, while it is twice for teachers, i.e. in the morning and evening.
