‘Was beaten with a rod, attempted rape, both legs were broken’ Ilyas begum talks of abuse in Dubai

Hyderabad: Woman across the nation, especially in Hyderabad, are often lured with promising lucrative jobs, hefty salaries in Gulf. These women quite often fall victim to such hoax fake opportunity traps and most of times end up being trafficked to Gulf countries with no hope of returning back to the city.

Speaking to one such victim who has lost her both legs to the horrific abuse after being taken as a domestic help in Dubai.

Walking down the painful memory lanes of the abuse she went through and lost her both legs a resident of Shaheenagar, Ilyas Begum narrates the painful incident which has now left her crippled when she tried to resist the advances made by her employer’s son.

“I was promised a job in Dubai in 2016 but when I landed there, I was asked to get into a flight and sent to Riyadh. When I complained of too much work, I was beaten with a rod. One day, the son of the kafeel (employer) tried to force himself on me and I ran to the third floor. He pushed me down.”

She was hospitalized for three months and was helped by other Indians working at the hospital who were moved by her state.

Had her husband not intervened and requested the Indian authorities to rescue his wife she would have never returned back home.

Begum now regularly visits Osmania Hospital for treatment. “I’m glad to be back home but I wish I could walk and not be a burden on my husband,” she says.
Another victim of a similar abuse this domestic help experienced I Saudi Arabia is Zainab begum also from Hyderabd city. Narrating her ordeal she went through, she said: “They hit me with chappals or any object within reach and threatened me if I asked for money or tried to call home. When I couldn’t take it any more, I tried to take my life.”

Had her family never appealed to the Indian government to rescue her, Zainab would have never returned to her motherland, to her daughter Rubeena.
Ms. Zainab is among the many women trafficked from Hyderabad to the Middle East, lured by illegal agents with promises of comfortable jobs and hefty salaries.

These women are quite often subjected to abuse, humiliation at the hands of their employees in these Gulf countries.

Just like these two ladies, Amena, a resident of Singareni Colony, Saidabad, was also lured with a job in Dubai was later trafficked to Saudi Arabia.
“I was given one meal a day. I had to beg even for water. I worked throughout the day yet they tortured me,” recalls Amena.

Unable to withstand the torture she finally walked out of the house and approached the police. The Indian embassy was notified and Amena was able to return to India.

These are the very few lucky women who were fortunate to escape but still there are many helpless miserable women trafficked to middle east who continue to live with no help approaching them.
