Charminar MLA Mir Zulfiqar Ali inspects the scne after a portion of corridor at Government City College collapses
Hyderabad: A portion of the corridor at Hyderabad’s historic Government City College collapsed on Monday morning, August 24, with no casualties reported in the incident.
Charminar MLA Mir Zulfiqar Ali made an emergency visit to the college after being notified of the incident. He inspected the overall condition of the building and the affected corridors of Physics, Chemistry, Botany, and Zoology departments, as well as near the library.
Ali expressed concern over the deteriorating condition of the more than 100-year-old building, and called on the government to restore the heritage structure. He said that the roofs have been severely affected due to continuous rains and lack of maintenance, with exposed reinforcement rods visible at several places.
“It was fortunate that students were not present at the spot when the portion collapsed,” said Ali. “Otherwise, the lives of nearly 6,000 students studying at the college could have been at serious risk.”
He appealed to Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy and the state government to immediately release emergency funds for the repair of the historic building, replacement of damaged slabs and necessary renovation works.
Ali urged the government to take urgent safety measures to ensure the protection of students and staff of the institution.
One of the oldest heritage structures in Hyderabad, the Government City College has its history rooted in a school named Madrasa Dar-ul-uloom, established by Nizam Mahbub Ali Khan in 1865. The seventh Nizam, Osman Ali Khan, later converted it into a City High School. It moved to the present building in 1921, and by 1929, the school was upgraded to a college.
The Hyderabad City Improvement Board at the time had commissioned British architect Vincent Esch to design and construct the building, while Nawab Khan Bahadur Mirza Akbar Baig served as its chief engineer.
It is an autonomous university affiliated with Osmania University and offers both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.
