Senior citizens held with drugs worth Rs 10 lakh in Hyderabad

According to the Central Crime Station, the accused were transporting ganja from Araku, Andhra Pradesh, to Mumbai.

Hyderabad: Five people, including senior citizens, were arrested on Friday, August 21, with 38 kg of dry ganja worth Rs 10 lakh in Hyderabad while en route to Mumbai.

The accused were identified as Rajaram Swami Kannu Padaiyachi, 78; Santosh Balaram Prajapathi, 65, both from Maharashtra; Vijayalaxmi Kaliyamurti Pella, 66, a native of Tamil Nadu; Silmina Kuju, 36, a native of Jharkhand; and Sheela Devi, 48, also from Jharkhand.

They were transporting the contraband, packed in brown-coloured parcel covers, from Araku, Andhra Pradesh, to Mumbai.

Being senior citizens, Rajaram, Santosh Balaram and Vijayalaxmi Kaliyamurti would attract low suspicion and easily transport the drugs to Mumbai. Police said they were allegedly paid between Rs 10,000 and Rs 12,000 for each delivery.

To avoid arrest, all five boarded buses from different depots in Hyderabad.

However, all five were arrested and have been sent to judicial remand.
