Excise official nabbed by Telangana ACB for extorting money from merchant

Gundeti Ramu, who previously served as a station house officer in Vemulawada, used to regularly take 'mamool' from a jaggery merchant, ACB said.

Hyderabad: Telangana Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on Wednesday, March 18, arrested a Prohibition and Excise Inspector from Karimnagar Urban and one of his associates for allegedly extorting money from a jaggery merchant.

According to the ACB, the accused officer, Gundeti Ramu, who previously served as a station house officer in Vemulawada, used to regularly take ‘mamool’ from a jaggery merchant through his friend and former colleague, Jakkani Venu, a secondary grade teacher in Obulapur.

These bribes were routed through UPI transactions between 2022 and 2024. During a recent search of Gundeti Ramu’s residence, ACB officials uncovered and seized Rs 20 lakhs in unaccounted cash.

A case has been registered, and further investigation is underway.

ACB has urged citizens to report bribery demands by government officials through its toll-free number 1064, WhatsApp number 9440446106, its Facebook page (Telangana ACB) or its website.
