Hyderabad: Scores of dead fish in Tellapur lake, locals link it to pollution

Residents allege untreated sewage inflow into Tellapur Lake as video shows mass fish deaths, raising concerns over water quality and pollution on Hyderabad’s outskirts.

Hyderabad: Large numbers of dead fish have been reported in Chelikunta Lake in Osman Nagar near Tellapur, on the outskirts of Hyderabad, on Thursday, April 2, with residents linking the incident to the continuous discharge of untreated sewage into the water body.

Speaking with Siasat.com, Tellapur Neighbourhood Association (TeNA) president Ramana Eshwaragari said fish carcasses were seen floating on the surface and along the edges of the lake on Thursday, accompanied by foul odour and visible deterioration in water quality.

Representations to CM, TGPCB, Collector

TeNA submitted representations to the Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy, the Telangana Pollution Control Board (TGPCB) and the Sangareddy District Collector, alleging that untreated drainage and sewage from multiple sources, including labour camps and construction sites, are entering the lake.

In its complaint, the association stated that the discharge has been ongoing despite repeated representations, describing the situation as a failure of enforcement by concerned authorities.

It warned that continued inflow of untreated wastewater could impact public health, groundwater quality, and the ecological balance of the area.

Immediate inspection of site sought

The association has sought immediate inspection of the site, identification and closure of sewage discharge points and measures to prevent further inflow. It has also requested that authorities submit an action taken report at the earliest.
