Hyderabad CP warns against chemically ripened mangoes as summer arrives

Hyderabad Police warn of toxic chemicals used to ripen mangoes artificially, urging citizens to stay alert and avoid visually appealing but potentially harmful fruits.

Hyderabad: With the onset of summer, markets across Hyderabad are witnessing a surge in the availability of mangoes, popularly known as the “King of Fruits.” However, alongside the seasonal delight comes a serious public health concern. Authorities have cautioned that some traders are resorting to hazardous methods to artificially ripen mangoes, putting consumers at risk.

Use of hazardous chemicals raises concern

According to officials, certain unscrupulous traders are using substances such as calcium carbide to accelerate the ripening process. While these mangoes may appear visually appealing with a bright, uniform yellow color, they often remain unripe internally and may contain toxic residues.

Experts note that naturally ripened mangoes typically display uneven colouration and develop their sweetness gradually, unlike chemically treated fruits.

Health risks associated with artificial ripening

Medical professionals have warned that consuming chemically ripened mangoes can lead to immediate health issues, including throat irritation, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhoea. Prolonged exposure to such toxic substances may result in more severe complications, including respiratory disorders and potential damage to the nervous system.

The invisible nature of these contaminants makes them particularly dangerous for unsuspecting consumers.

Police intensify surveillance under H-FAST initiative

In response to the growing concern, the Hyderabad City Police has stepped up enforcement through the H-FAST (Hyderabad Food Adulteration and Surveillance Team) initiative. Officials stated that strict monitoring is being carried out across markets, and traders found violating food safety norms will face legal action.

The initiative aims to curb adulteration and ensure that only safe produce reaches consumers.

Advisory issued to the public

Authorities have urged citizens to remain vigilant while purchasing mangoes and not to be misled by their внеш appearance. Consumers are advised to watch for signs such as a chemical odor, unusual taste, abnormal spots, or unnatural color changes after washing the fruit. Such indicators may suggest chemical treatment and potential health hazards.

Citizens encouraged to report violations

In an effort to involve the public in ensuring food safety, residents have been encouraged to report any suspected sale of chemically ripened mangoes. Complaints can be lodged by dialling 100 or by contacting the H-FAST helpline. Officials emphasised that public cooperation is essential in tackling the issue effectively.

Commissioner urges vigilance

Issuing the advisory, VC Sajjanar, Commissioner of Police, Hyderabad City, called on citizens to stay alert and make informed choices. He stressed that awareness and timely reporting can play a crucial role in safeguarding public health and ensuring a safe summer season for all.
