11 feared dead in Bengaluru stampede amid RCB’s celebrations; probe ordered

According to reports, a child and a woman are among those feared dead in the stampede.

Bengaluru: Some RCB fans were reportedly injured and a few of them fell unconscious, with 11 feared dead in chaos and a stampede near the Chinnaswamy Stadium, in Bengaluru, when they gathered to attend a special felicitation for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s maiden IPL title win.

According to reports, a child and a woman are among those feared dead in the Bengaluru stampede.

While a lot of fans gathered for the felicitation held by the Karnataka State Cricket Association, visuals showed police shifting the injured persons and those who fell unconscious to the nearby hospital.

According to a traffic advisory from the Bengaluru police, entry to Chinnaswamy Stadium was limited to only those with valid tickets and passes. “As there is limited parking facility available near the Chinnaswamy Stadium, those who are attending the event are advised to use public transport and Metro. The public is requested to cooperate,” it had said.

Karnataka CM orders probe into Bengaluru stampede

Following the chaos, Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah said that a magisterial inquiry has been ordered and the report will be received in 15 days. “People even broke the gates of the stadium. There was a stampede. No one expected such a huge crowd. The stadium has a capacity of only 35,000 people, but 2-3 lakh people came,” he said, explaining the chaos that led to the stampede.

He later visited Bowring and Vaidehi hospitals, inquired about the well-being of those injured in the stampede near Chinnaswamy Stadium, and offered condolences to the families of the deceased.

Karnataka govt facilitates RCB team

Meanwhile, Governor Taawarchand Gehlot, chief minister Siddaramaiah and deputy chief minister D K Shivakumar felicitated the RCB team on the grand steps in front of the iconic Vidhana Soudha, the seat of state legislature and secretariat here.

In a short event, the team was felicitated with a traditional Mysuru peta (opulent formal turban), shawl and garland.

Large number of people had gathered in front of Vidhana Soudha to witness the event.

The team will also be participating in an event organised by the Karnataka State Cricket Academy (KSCA) at the Chinnaswamy Cricket Stadium.

Kharge, Rahul express grief

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi have expressed their sadness over a tragic stampede and urged the state government to strengthen safety protocols to avoid such incidents in the future.

“I am deeply saddened by the tragic stampede in Bengaluru during the celebrations of Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s IPL 2025 victory. The loss of precious lives and the injuries sustained by many in this unfortunate incident are profoundly distressing.

“My thoughts and prayers are with the families who lost loved ones, and I wish a speedy recovery to the injured,” Kharge said in a post on X.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said the stampede near Bengaluru’s Chinnaswamy Stadium during RCB’s IPL victory celebrations is heartbreaking.

“My condolences to the families who lost their loved ones. Wishing a swift and full recovery to all those injured.

“In this hour of grief, I stand with the people of Bengaluru. The Karnataka government must provide all possible support and relief to the affected families,” Gandhi said in a post on X.

“This tragedy is a painful reminder: no celebration is worth a human life. Every safety protocol for public events must be reviewed and strictly enforced — lives must always come first,” the former Congress president said.
