Hyderabad: A Class 8 girl was injured after a ceiling fan collapsed inside her classroom at Nasr School, Khairatabad, on June 30, an incident which has led to allegations of negligence on the part of the prestigious school.
The incident occurred after school hours, when a few students and teachers stayed back voluntarily to prepare for a chart competition scheduled for July 1. The injured student was rushed to the infirmary on the premises by her class teacher and treated by the on-campus nurse. The school management then transported her to a nearby hospital in a private school vehicle and claims to have paid for her care.
However, as per medical documents accessed by Siasat.com, the girl suffered an injury to her right eyelid and eyeball, needing multiple surgeries. Yet the incident only came to light after social media outrage, accusing the school of negligence and downplaying the severity of the incident.
Social media users alleged she was left unconscious, suffered multiple fractures, partial blindness in one eye, and required facial reconstruction surgery. The victim’s father corroborated these claims, which the school denies.
The posts accused the school of carelessness, alleging that she was rushed to a hospital in a school bus.
Following the incident, after receiving first aid at the hospital, the student’s guardians were informed of the incident.
Later in the evening, on June 30, the victim’s father, Mohammed Zubair Osmani, registered a complaint with the Kharitabad police, accusing the school of negligence, based on which an FIR was filed the next day. He alleged that the school tampered with evidence by refitting or replacing the fan without any official documentation or inspection.
“What was the hurry to fix the fan back when such a grave accident had occurred on the premises of your school?” he questioned, adding that an ambulance was not arranged for transporting the injured child, a basic necessity in case of emergencies.
Osmani told Siasat.com that the school was trying to pass off the incident as a “freak accident” and is attempting to deny any responsibility for it.
The child has undergone multiple procedures, including eyelid reconstruction, orbicular repair, and multilayer closure. Her father maintains that the burden of continued treatment has fallen solely on the family, contrary to the school’s claims of covering costs, with further review and surgeries pending.
Terming the allegations against the school on social media and the victim’s father, Nasr School principal, Mir Mohiuddin Mohammed, stated that she was not severely injured in the accident as that fan did not”directly fall on her.”
He added that the school inspects all electrical equipment every three years, and the classroom had new fittings installed just this summer.
Speaking to Siasat.com, the Hyderabad school principal claimed that the girl’s father was spreading the false information. “We have done everything possible to ensure the safety of every child in our school.”
He dismissed claims that the girl was taken to the hospital in a school bus. “Since the hospital is close to the school, we took the child in our vehicle. Initially, a professional nurse on our premises provided first aid to the student, and the bleeding stopped,” he added.
The principal shared medical bills and an email he shot at the Yashoda Hospital management, in what Osmani terms as an attempt to wash away responsibility, describing the child’s injuries as “slight” blurriness in vision and requiring a “minor plastic surgery.”
“After the initial medical check-up, her vision was fine, but she reported slight blurriness due to the injury,” claimed Mohiuddin.
The principal claimed that the family was initially cooperative but changed their stance after the student was discharged. However, it is pertinent to note that the complaint was lodged on the day of the incident itself, June 30, while the student remained hospitalised and was discharged only on July 3.
Reacting to this, Osmani called the move an attempt to shift responsibility and reduce the severity of the incident. “Are they trying to imply that I was waiting for tragedy to befall my child to gain money? These allegations are defamatory. They must issue an apology, or I will ensure that we bring him to justice.”
