Telangana cabinet gives nod to take over Hyderabad Metro Rail from L&T

The cabinet also decided to change the Telangana Vaidya Vidhana Parishad (TVVP) to the Directorate of Secondary Health

Hyderabad: The government has decided to take over the Hyderabad Metro Rail Project from L&T at the state cabinet meeting held at Dr BR Ambedkar Telangana State Secretariat on Monday, February 23.

Last year, the government took over Phase 1 of the Metro after L&T clarified it would not participate in Phase 2 as an equity partner, adding it had exited the business of owning and operating transport concession projects.

Soon after the cabinet meeting, Revenue Minister Ponguleti Srinivasa Reddy addressed the media, stating the government would take over Phase 1 from March 31, bear the cost for the remaining work and maintenance and urge the Centre to disburse funds for Phases 2 and 3 of the Hyderabad Metro Rail project.

The meeting was chaired by Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy, during which the State Budget Sessions, which will commence from March 16, were discussed.

Accident insurance for govt employees, pensioners

The state government will introduce accident insurance for its employees and pensioners.

This insurance covers 5.19 lakh workers in addition to 2.38 lakh pensioners. It offers a cover of Rs 1.25 crore in case of accidents, and Rs 10 lakh in case of natural death if the worker is below 60 years. Regular employees working in government departments, corporations and public sector undertakings can apply.

“We will not ask a single penny as insurance premium,” the minister assured, highlighting its successful implementation for Singareni and Telangana Transmission Corporation of Telangana Limited (TGTRANSCO) employees.

A new cashless Employee Health Scheme (EHS) to benefit 3.56 lakh regular government employees and 2.88 lakh pensioners, as well as their family members, covering a total of 17.07 individuals, will come into place.

This scheme can be availed in all government hospitals and 652 empanelled private hospitals, to get free treatment for 1,998 medical conditions using digital health employee cards.

“The scheme would require a deduction of 1.5 per cent from the basic pay, totalling to Rs 528 crore per year. The government will deposit an equal share of Rs 528 crore in a trust headed by the Chief Secretary,” Minister Reddy said.

Renaming Telangana Vaidya Vidhana Parishad

The government has decided to rename the Telangana Vaidya Vidhana Parishad (TVVP) to the Directorate of Secondary Health (DSH), bringing its employees directly under the state government.

TVVP is an autonomous body mainly funded by the central government. “Funds allocation, procurement of surgical equipment and medicines, and payment of salaries to the employees will become timely. The medical and health service delivery will improve,” he said.

Gear up for summers

The cabinet discussed the three-month water supply plan for summers along with health and education. A committee chaired by Health Minister Damodar Raja Narasimha will prepare a proposal for the healthcare sector.

Manjeera water supply scheme

The cabinet approved Rs 772 crore for the modernisation of the Manjeera Water Supply Scheme under Phase 1 and 2. Likewise, the Osmansagar Drinking Water Pipeline will undergo a facelift with Rs 282 crore. “The decision was taken after multiple complaints of leakage in the old pipeline were received, leading to drinking water problems in the twin cities,” Minister Ponguleti Srinivasa Reddy said.

Land allocation

The cabinet has decided to allocate 20 acres of land in the Khammam district for the establishment of Tirumala Tirupathi Devasthanams (TTD), 70 acres of land to the Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU) in Gummadur village in Mahabubabad, and 36 acres to Satavahana University’s college in Husnabad of Siddipet district.

Reddy stated that a decision has been made to hand over 239 acres of land in Koheda village, Rangareddy district, near the Inner Ring Road, for the development of a multi-modal logistics and food processing park. Additionally, 223 acres of land previously allocated to the Marketing Department will be transferred to the Telangana Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (TGIIC).

Young India Integrated Schools

The cabinet gave its nod to allocate 20-25 acres of land for each of the Young India Integrated Schools being built in 21 constituencies in the first phase.

It will transfer 153 acres of land to the Defence Ministry to acquire 42 acres of its land in Karimnagar for various infrastructural works, such as road widening and high-level corridors.

The five-acre site in Bhadrachalam town has been allocated to the Sports Authority of Telangana for the construction of a mini stadium. The cabinet also approved a new green energy policy, permitting data centers to generate up to 300 MW of power.
