Hyderabad: In a tragic incident, a newly married man set himself ablaze in Telangana’s Karimnagar district on Tuesday, April 7, after being separated from his wife.
The man, identified as Varun, is a native of Rangareddy. He fell in love with Vanaja from Karimnagar after the two came in touch through Instagram and were in a relationship for one year. Both of them belonged to the Scheduled Caste (SC) community. They got married recently.
The police told Siasat.com that Varun visited Karimnagar on April 4 and contacted Vanaja, who went to Hyderabad with him. The couple got married and began living in a room. According to the police, Vanaja informed her parents about the marriage.
Vanaja’s parents asked the couple to visit them in Karimnagar so that they could meet Varun and perform the wedding rituals. The couple agreed and visited Karimnagar on April 5. However, Vanaja’s family asked Varun to bring his family members as they wanted to have a conversation with them. They asked Vanaja to stay back and wait for Varun to return with his family.
“Varun agreed to the demand and went back to get his family. However, since his father had passed away, the man came back to Karimnagar with his friends,” the police said.
The couple then approached the Karimnagar Rural Police seeking protection. However, Vanaja’s family arrived at the police station and took her away, as Varun failed to provide any proof of marriage, proof of address or details about his family.
Upset over the incident, Varun doused himself with petrol and set himself on fire. Passersby and police noticed the man and tried to put out the fire before shifting him to a local hospital. He was later transferred to a hospital in Hyderabad for better treatment.
The police said Varun suffered 40 per cent burns and is currently under treatment. “No case has been registered so far since the man is under treatment,” the police said.
