Hyderabad: The Cyberabad police on Saturday, August 23, claimed to have cracked the sensational murder case of 10-year-old Sahasra (also referred to as Sahasrini), who was discovered brutally stabbed to death within her house on August 18.
Speaking at a press conference, police stated that a Class 10 student, a 14-year-old boy, had been arrested for the murder. According to the police narrative, the teenager had entered the victim’s home through the terrace to steal an MRF cricket bat belonging to her little brother.
When Sahasra noticed him and tried to raise an alarm, he panicked and stabbed her repeatedly with a knife, and she died instantly.
Police stated that the accused boy, who is legally known as a Child in Conflict with Law (CCL), had planned to steal. He was carrying a knife and gloves. The boy allegedly washed the weapon after murdering Sahasra, changed his bloody clothes, and attempted to go back to normal behaviour so as not to raise any suspicion.
Cyberabad Commissioner Stephen Raveendra informed the media that the motive behind the crime was connected with the cricket bat theft. “The accused had developed a fascination for the cricket bat and tried to steal it. When the victim caught him in the act, he brutally killed her,” he said.
Police have filed a case under section 103(1) BNS, along with additional sections 331(5) and 305 BNS at Kukatpally Police Station. The child was brought before the court and will be committed to a Juvenile Home.
Police seized the following during the investigation:
But in the days following the killing, accounts from investigators and neighbours had posed an alternative scenario.
As per the previous version, the boy was said to have planned to steal Rs 80,000 in cash from the house as well as rupture a hundi (donation pot) stored in the house. He was even said to have thought of producing a gas leak to set the house on fire after a burglary.
That version stated that Sahasra was accosted by the boy during the act, after which he first beat her and choked her and stabbed her with a knife. Police still ruled out the robbery motive during Saturday’s briefing, saying their probe identified the theft of the cricket bat as the motive.
The killing has left the people of Kukatpally shocked. Sahasra, a Class 6 student of Kendriya Vidyalaya, Begumpet, was at home when the attack happened since her mother was out for work.
The police recreated the crime scene on Friday and neighbours flocked to the victim’s house in huge numbers. The locals demanded justice and were shocked that a 14-year-old boy could commit such an act.
The victim’s family, who had been making arrangements for her younger brother’s birthday, is now finding it hard to cope with the tragedy.
Though the Cyberabad police claim that the theft of the cricket bat was the motive for the murder, the case remains in the limelight with the brutality of the crime and the inconsistencies with the previous account.
