In a case of honour killing, a father allegedly murdered his 22-year-old daughter for marrying a man of her choice in Macharla town of Andhra Pradesh’s Palnadu district.
The victim, Chaudeshwari, was found dead under suspicious circumstances on March 18. While her death was suspected to be a suicide, following a post-mortem and further investigation, the police confirmed that it was a murder.
It is learned that Chaudeshwari’s father, Chandrashekar, had arranged a marriage for his daughter with a teacher. However, Chaudeshwari did not like this match. Instead, she eloped with her now husband, Nagaraj.
Enraged, Chandrashekar filed a complaint against Chaudeshwari, accusing her of eloping with gold ornaments and cash. Subsequently, Chaudeshwari and Nagaraj appeared before the police, after which she agreed to return to her father’s house for five days.
According to local reports, Chaudeshwari’s father smothered her to death at his house when she was asleep and tried to stage it as a suicide.
The post-mortem report raised suspicions, which confirmed the cause of death as asphyxiation. Following this, the police questioned the father, who confessed to the crime. He stated that he was upset over his daughter eloping with her boyfriend.
The police arrested Chandrashekar, and further investigation is underway.
