Hyderabad airport nears capacity, BJP MP seeks second terminal

The Hyderabad airport handled over 3 crore passengers in 2024–25, highlighting rising pressure.

Hyderabad: Medak MP M Raghunandan Rao on Thursday, April 3, requested the Centre to approve a second terminal at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA), citing growing passenger traffic.

Rao made this request during Zero Hour in Lok Sabha, stating that “as per official figures, 35 lakh passengers have used this airport in 2025-26 so far, and the total traffic is expected to reach its peak handling capacity soon.”

It is to be noted that Hyderabad airport is witnessing growing traffic. In fact, Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA), which is operated by GMR Hyderabad International Airport Limited, handled over three crore passengers in 2024-25, registering a sharp increase in traffic driven by strong domestic and international traffic. The airport has witnessed consistent double-digit growth in recent years.

Although the Hyderabad airport has been expanded in phases, the MP stated that the existing infrastructure could be stretched if the growth in traffic volume continues to rise at the same rate.

Pointing out a major deficiency in infrastructure in Telangana, Rao stated that Telangana has only one major airport, whereas several airports are already functioning in Andhra Pradesh. He urged the state government to expedite the process of acquiring lands for new airports.

The MP also urged the state government to expedite work on two projects cleared by the Centre in Mamnoor near Warangal and Adilabad.
