Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Disaster Relief and Assets Protection Agency (HYDRAA) on Tuesday, May 5, demolished six illegal mining units across the city as part of an ongoing crackdown on unauthorised operations.
The demolition drive targeted the Raghava Stone Crusher in Kotwalguda, the Great India Mining Company in Gachibowli, Paramesh Singh Stone Crusher and Sri Lakshmi Constructions at Vattinagulapally and the Prithvi Stone Crusher along with units linked to Maktha Bhagat Singh.
All six units were reportedly operating without permission from the Telangana Pollution Control Board and without the requisite mining clearances.
Videos circulating on social media showed a JCB dismantling makeshift sheds at the sites. HYDRAA also seized the mining machinery to prevent any resumption of operations.
The illegal mining had caused heavy pollution and cost the state hundreds of crores in lost revenue, officials said.
56 complaints filed at Prajavani over illegal constructions
The day before, on Monday, May 4, HYDRAA received 56 complaints during its public grievance forum Prajavani, flagging illegal constructions over lakes and drainage channels on the city’s outskirts.
Several complainants raised alarm over buildings coming up directly over nalas in the IDPL Colony–Jagadgirigutta stretch under Qutbullapur in Medchal-Malkajgiri district, warning that such encroachments could severely obstruct rainwater drainage and trigger flooding in surrounding neighbourhoods during the monsoon season.
Residents urged HYDRAA to act swiftly before the rains set in.
