For 1st-time ever, Germany’s Frankfurt lights up for Ramzan

"These are the lights of togetherness: against prejudice, discrimination, anti-Muslim racism and also antisemitism," Frankfurt Mayor Narges Alexandri said.

In a symbolic gesture of unity and inclusion, the German city of Frankfurt has been illuminated with lights for the first time to commemorate the Islamic holy month of Ramzan 1445 AH/2024.

In a ceremony on Sunday, March 10, a banner showcasing “Happy Ramadan” in the middle of a street in the city centre was officially switched on, with half-moons, stars and other decorations.

Frankfurt Mayor Narges Alexandri in a press release cited by the Anadolu Agency (AA) praised the “wonderful” gesture that demonstrates peaceful coexistence among all Frankfurt residents.

She said that such messages are particularly important during times of war and crisis, adding, “These are the lights of togetherness: against prejudice, discrimination, anti-Muslim racism and also antisemitism.”

“Ramzan is a time in which people reflect on what is really important in life: having something to eat, a roof over your head, and peace and comfort with family, friends and neighbours. I’m pleased that these messages of peace during Ramzan will be visible in our Frankfurt,” city council chairwoman Hilime Arslaner was quoted as saying by Deutsche Welle.

This initiative was inspired by the city of London, which lit up its streets for the first time during the holy month of Ramzan in 2023.
