MLA defections in Telangana Assembly

Leaders of Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), the main opposition party, had appealed to Speaker Gaddam Prasad Kumar to disqualify all 10 BRS MLAs who defected to Congress since March last year.

The MLAs which BRS alleged had switched their loyalty to Congress include Danam Nagender (Khairatabad constituency), Tellam Venkat Rao (Bhadrachalam), Kadiyam Srihari (Station Ghanpur), Pocharam Srinivas Reddy (Banswada), M Sanjay Kumar (Jagtial), Arekapudi Gandhi (Serilingampally), T Prakash Goud (Rajendranagar), B Krishna Mohan Reddy (Gadwal), G Mahipal Reddy (Patancheru), and Kale Yadaiah (Chevella).

The BRS had also approached the Supreme court seeking directions to the Speaker of the Telangana Legislative Assembly to decide expeditiously the disqualification petitions.

Following this, the top court on July 31 ordered the Speaker to decide on the disqualification petitions within three months.

The Speaker had then issued notices to the defected MLAs who in turn replied saying that they were still with the BRS and had not defected to the Congress.

According to reports, MLAs Kadiyam Srihari, Kale Yadaiah, Arikapudi Gandhi and T Prakash Goud met with the Speaker on Friday, September 26 and it is said that Kadiyam Srihari asked for a deadline till September 30 to reply to the Speaker’s notice.
