Hyderabad: Heavy overnight rains battered parts of Hyderabad on Monday and Tuesday, June 22 and 23, leaving several neighbourhoods waterlogged, snapping power supply in many areas and snarling traffic across the city.
Chandanagar recorded 12.7 centimetres of rainfall while Lingampally received 11.7 cm — both classified as very heavy rainfall by the Telangana Planning Development Society.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued a warning at 10:30 pm on Monday, alerting residents to light to moderate rain and thundershowers with gusty winds reaching up to 50 kmph across parts of the GHMC area over the following one to two hours.
As the rains intensified, commuters took to X to raise concerns about waterlogging and power disruption in their neighbourhoods.
Vehicles submerged in Ameenpur
In Ameenpur, residential areas bore the brunt of the downpour, with cellars of housing buildings filling up rapidly and vehicles getting submerged. Authorities moved in to drain the water and shift vehicles to safer locations. Videos circulating on social media showed residents struggling to pull a car out of a flooded basement.
In Cyberabad Municipal Corporation limits, a resident posted on X that a broken storm drain and sewerage system had caused floodwater to enter homes, with people on the street resorting to building makeshift barriers to keep the water out.

Traffic hit across city
The Hyderabad Traffic Police issued a series of alerts through the night as waterlogging choked several key stretches.
Waterlogging was reported near the Dr Manmohan Singh Flyover and Ramdev Baba Mandir in Shivrampally Jagir. On the 100 Feet Road between Jiyaguda and Puranapool, traffic was diverted to a single lane towards Puranapool, with commuters warned to expect delays and cooperate with personnel on duty.
Commuters travelling from Nehru Zoological Park and Bahadurpura towards Aramgarh were advised to use the Dr Manmohan Singh Flyover and avoid the stretch beneath it, where water clearance operations were under way. Motorists across the city were urged to drive cautiously and follow all traffic advisories.
Commissioner lauds police response
Hyderabad Commissioner of Police VC Sajjanar acknowledged the disruption and praised the traffic police for their on-ground response. “We urge the public to cooperate by following official traffic advisories to ensure they reach their destinations safely during the rains,” he said in a post on X.
