Hyderabad: The South Central Railway (SCR) and the state government have dismissed reports of free travel on Hyderabad’s Multi-Modal Transport System (MMTS) trains from June 2, stating the reports are false.
FactCheck_Telangana shared on its X account, calling the earlier information “misleading and inaccurate,” and stated the proposal is under consideration.
“The Telangana Government and the South Central Railway are actively considering the proposal of the Telangana State to provide free travel to passengers in the city on MMTS services,” read its X post.
Sources to Siasat.com have also confirmed that the proposal is under consideration.
It is confirmed that the state government did propose to implement a free ridership scheme. In response, the board said the proposal would require a formal Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and Railway Board’s approval.
SCR clarified that MMTS services are currently being operated based on passenger demand and operational constraints. “In this regard, South Central Railway reserves the right to determine the number of services to be operated, along with their timings,” the letter stated.
The letter also drew the government’s attention to pending dues payable to Railways towards implementation of the MMTS Phase-II project, amounting to Rs 491.45 crore.
