Karnataka: Muslim boy attacked with glass bottles dies, 8 held

Hyderabad: 19-year-old, Mohammed Masood died on Thursday while undergoing treatment after being attacked by a gang of eight members at Kalanja village in Sullia taluk, Karnataka on July 19.

On Tuesday, the deceased Masood and one of the accused Sudhir allegedly got into a fight. Later, the same night, Sudhir and seven other people attacked Masood while demanding a resolution to the conflict outside a local shop.

Masood was gravely injured in the altercation, as glass bottles were also allegedly smashed on his head. He received initial care at a hospital in Sullia before being transferred to a private facility, where he passed away on July 21, Thursday.

The accused Abhilash, Sunil, Sudhir, Shiva, Ranjith, Sadashiva, Jim Ranjith, and Bhaskar were all taken into custody by the Bellare police on July 20. They were charged with crimes that were prohibited under sections 143 (Whoever is a member of an unlawful assembly, shall be punished), 147 (Punishment for rioting), 323 (Punishment for voluntarily causing hurt), and 149 (Every member of unlawful assembly guilty of offence commit­ted in the prosecution of the common object) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). The eight people have also been charged with murder following the passing away of Masood.

The accused were reportedly members of the Bajrang Dal and reports of the murder of Masood being a pre-planned crime have also emerged.

On July 21, several people gathered at the municipal hospital after hearing of his death. They demanded that Masood’s body not be moved unless Deputy Commissioner K.V. Rajendra visits the scene and guarantees that the deceased’s family members would receive compensation.

After receiving confirmation from the Tahsildar, people let the body be moved for the last rituals. U.T. Khader, a Mangaluru MLA, visited the hospital in the meanwhile and urged the arrest of everyone connected to the crime.

Additionally, he requested that the Karnataka government compensate the deceased Masood’s family members as soon as possible.
