
Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) council approved Rs 8,440 crore for estimated budget for 2025-26 financial year on Thursday, January 30. The revised budget for the previous financial year 2024-25 was approved at Rs. 8,118 crore.
The meeting chaired by Hyderabad Mayor Gadwal Vijayalakshmi was attended by key officials and council members.
The session began with a two-minute silence to mourn the passing of former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh followed by a tribute to Mahatma Gandhi on his death anniversary.
Hyderabad Mayor Vijayalakshmi expressed gratitude to the state government for allocating funds for the city’s development and emphasized the importance of coordination between public representatives and officials to ensure the success of infrastructure and welfare projects.
“We must provide the necessary infrastructure for the city’s residents. Public representatives and officials need to work in harmony for the comprehensive development of Hyderabad,” said Mayor Vijayalakshmi.
The meeting saw a wide range of discussions, with corporators urging attention to issues such as sanitation, street lighting, and the development of sports grounds. They also noted the need for an efficient tax collection drive, particularly from corporate schools in the city.
GHMC commissioner Ilambarthi assured the council that the development of parks and sports grounds would be prioritized, with necessary facilities and funds being allocated. He also addressed the street lighting issue, stating that the work would be completed soon, with contractors already appointed.
MP and ex-officio member Etela Rajender emphasized the need for complete public trust in the governing council. He called for collaborative efforts to address city challenges, improve infrastructure, and focus on welfare schemes for the poor. He also urged authorities to clean water sources across the city to prevent foul smells.
The meeting saw disruptions when BRS members were escorted out by marshals for obstructing proceedings.
