Thane to get pod taxi service: Shinde

A pod taxi is part of the Personal Rapid Transit mechanism in which fully automated, driverless, electric vehicles run on elevated tracks to transport a small number of persons.

Thane: Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has said that an ambitious pod taxi project has been planned for Thane city to provide last-mile connectivity.

Addressing an event here on Tuesday, March 31, Shinde said that on the lines of the Metro, Coastal Road and the Thane-Borivali twin-tunnel projects, the pod taxi service will offer fast and modern transport to the residents of the city.

Shinde said the foundation stone for the ambitious pod taxi project in Thane’s Ghodbunder area will be laid soon. “We are also planning a ‘Twin Tower’ in the city similar to the Eiffel Tower,” he said.

He also thanked the civic body for renovating the press room at the Thane Municipal Corporation headquarters.

“Journalists risk their lives during emergencies like COVID-19 to keep the public informed. It is the administration’s responsibility to provide them with high-quality facilities,” said the deputy CM, who is from Thane.

Despite rapid urbanisation, Thane has maintained its greenery, he added.
