Hyderabad: Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) officials raided a jewellery shop in Hyderabad’s Abids area on Monday, June 22, and seized approximately 1.6 kilogram of gold for alleged violations of mandatory hallmarking norms.
The enforcement action was carried out under the directions of PV Srikanth, Director and Head of BIS Hyderabad branch office.
During the inspection, officials found gold jewellery being offered for sale without the mandatory hallmark, as well as jewellery bearing old hallmark markings, both violations of the BIS Act.
The seized stock included rings, necklaces and pendants. BIS officials have initiated further legal action against the establishment.
Srikanth said consumer protection remains a key priority for BIS and urged consumers to purchase only BIS Hallmarked gold jewellery carrying the BIS logo, purity mark and Hallmark Unique Identification (HUID) number.
He advised buyers to verify the authenticity of hallmarked jewellery through the BIS CARE App before making a purchase and to insist on proper invoices. Consumers can also report instances of sale of non-hallmarked jewellery or misuse of BIS Hallmarks through the BIS CARE App or the nearest BIS office.
Srikanth further appealed to jewellers to strictly comply with mandatory hallmarking requirements and ensure that only BIS Hallmarked gold jewellery is sold to consumers in accordance with statutory provisions.
